Droopy Eyelids – Causes and their Treatments



Drooping eyelid is a common issue almost every women have to face nowadays while aging. Elastin is what makes women’s skin snap back in place after being stretched. As we all get older, we produce less elastin that can lead to the skin not being able to stretch back into place as easily as when people are younger. Collagen is what provides the platform that our skin rests on. Also, we produce less collagen as people age and this is the reason why people lose that rigidity. The skin tends to wrinkle and cave and this is especially true of the thin upper and lower eyelid skin.


What Causes Droopy Eyelids:


There are lots of causes of droopy eyelids and you may suspect that the causes of droopy eyelids are allergies. However, it is true that droopy eyelids also, known as ptosis, is not related to an allergy. The causes of this eyelid issue can stem from something benign but they can also develop from something more serious. There are number of factors that can affect the nerves, muscles or skin of the eyelids and it can also lead to ptosis.

Levator muscle are the muscles that allow your eyelid to move and these muscles can also weaken as a result of aging or even injury. There are some people that may be born with weaker eye muscles and also they may develop ptosis early in life. Below are the other main causes of droopy eyelids:

1. Cluster headaches

2. Nerve injury or a temporary stye (swelling and inflammation of the eyelid)

3. Neurological disorders like myasthenia gravis or Bell’s palsy

4. Droopy eyelids and the thyroid gland can be connected; ptosis can be a symptom of hypothyroidism

5. Routine cataract or LASIK surgery may lead to ptosis from a tendon or muscle being stretched


Symptoms of Droopy Eyelids:

  •       Increased tearing
  •       Drooping of one or both eyelids
  •       Interference with vision

How to Treat Droopy Eyelids:


If a disease is found then it will be treated. In most of the cases, droopy eyelids are because of aging and there is no disease involved.

In order to treat droopy eyelids, eyelid surgery can be done.

In some cases, surgery may be needed to correct interference with vision.
